The origin of life

Haio, holy ghosts, I now tell a story, that was handed from the first nation to me, and I will tell it how it was given me I won't change anything on it. If I forget something, forgive us and don't let come any harm over us. Haio, holy ghosts.

Well, I will tell how at the beginning humans were made. The one who made us first has made a doll. He took a buffalo to make the doll. He took the bones of the buffalo and put them together in a special way. He used sinews to bind them together. When this was finished he covered the bones with mud. Then he took blood - buffalo blood and poured it over the doll: and behold, it became a human body. But it wasn't a human yet, it doesn't live.

When I was told this, nobody said, who it was that made this doll - they simply said "the Creator".

When he had finished the doll, he blew into its mouth and it began to breathe. The he blew in its eyes and it could see. Then he said to it, it should sit up, and it straightened up. Finally he ordered to stand up.

The creator had made the doll on a underlay of sage and juniper and from this sage he took a little to clean mind and body of the doll. Then he laid four smaller bunches of sage on the floor and let the doll do its first four steps on them. From that time the doll could walk, breath and see. It was now a person, a man. Also today we take sage for many holy actions, because it was used for the first of our kind. Holy inaugurations are like a rebirth, and that's why we then make our first four steps on sage bunches. If a near relative dies, our body is cleaned with sage, and that is, as if we were reborn.

"Now", said the creator, "he is alive, but he will be all alone. With whom he should speak, to whom tell stories?" So he decided th make him a companion, a woman. He took the smaller bones of the buffalo, bound them together and covered them with mud and blood. He blew her into the mouth and she breathed, then into the eyes and she could see. A wolf came along the way and said: "My brother, can I help you?" The creator answered, that would be alright and the wolf made sounds in the mouth of the woman, like wolves do. That's why women have smaller voices than men. The creator said: "You will have many offspring".

Time passed and the man lived with his woman at a creek. They had two children - both boys - who were nearly adult.

One of them had light skin, the other dark. They got along rather good. The man went to hunt every day, the woman fetched water and wood.

Once, when the woman was down at the creek to fetch water, a very pleasant smell came in her nose. She didn't know what it was. When she went to fetch water the next time, it smelled the same and to her astonishmenta young men sat at the water. He looked very good and the woman was immediately moved by craving for him.

She took a lot of time to fill the pots, and it lasted a while till she came home again. Her husband became suspicious.

Finally the woman always stayed longer down at the creek and one day her husband was at home before her. He asked the children: "Where is your mother?" They said, she was gone for fetching water, but he argued, that it was nearly dark. Now he became distrustful and said to his sons: "Children, it will give discomfort. Here is a special stone and a piece of wood, take them. And here are also two kinds of water grass."

Then he said to the boys, they had to run for their lives, when it would become precarious, and he explained them the use of the things, which he had given to them. Immediately after the woman came home with wood and water. The man didn't say nothing.

The next morning he went again for hunting. To his woman he said: "I will hunt a lot of good meat, so I won't come back as soon." Therewith he went away, but not very far. He climbed a hill and observed the creek. And then he saw a snake - a giant snake, that came out of the water and transformed into a beautiful young man. Now he knew, what was the matter and why he became distrustful. He went home again and said to his sons they should prepare themselves.

Shortly after the heard a strange sound came near. The boys ran away, and the woman knew, that her liaison was detected. She followed them and tried to catch them. When she had nearly had gained on them they threw the stone behind them and with great bluster high mountains mounted up. They are now called Rocky Mountains. The gained a good advance before their persecutor had conquered the mountains. Meanwhile she had become a monster.

After a while she again had nearly caught the boys, so they threw th wood behind them. Immediately a big, dense wood covered the prairie. It stands till now in the east. The monster had troubles to come through, but then it was once again close on their heels and they threw one of the water grasses behind them. Immediately a giant water built up - many big lakes came out of the earth to hold the monster back. It is said these were the great lakes in the east. But not long the persecutor was once again near behind them and they threw their last medium behind them, the other water grass. This time a such enormous wide water built up behind them, that the monster could not cross over it - they were now on the shore called Europe.

The two brothers wandered around a long time on this side of the ocean. One day the climbed a big hill and the dark skinned said to the light skinned: "My brother, I feel very lonely here. You may stay and teach the people here all possible kind of things, but I think I have to go back to where I came from."

That's how the story of origin was told to me. And that's why I know that all our lives began at the same manner. We all are related since this early time.
